Vista SP2 standalone
I installed the 384mb standalone SP2 for Vista on my work machine this morning and have to say I don’t see much of a performance increase. It almost seems that it eats a bit more ram on than it did previously. Of course its nice to know that they bundled all the up to date security patches, but besides that I would say the biggest notable change would be the ability to write to blu-ray media. The WiFi performance is supposebly better coming out of sleep mode, which is something I will be able to comment on more in the next few days of using it as I haven’t undocked much today from my wired connection. SP2 does include Windows Seach 4.0 which if your still using 3.0 will be a nice suprise, as the index operation is much more efficent in 4.0. The support for Bluetooth 2.1 is also a notable change. An entire list of changes can be found here.
The install was a little bit rocky, as the system locked after the first prompt for reboot on the install. A hard reset did wonders and I was able to fire it right up and complete the second half of the installation. I’ll follow up in a few days after I get a better feel for some of the notable changes. As soon as Win7 is available via the MS Action Pack, this machine will be upgraded as I am loving Win7 at home.
