You know your a nerd when…you get all fired up about an upcoming Office release. What in particular? Web apps. In the upcoming Office 2010 suite, due to RTM sometime this month, they are introducing web apps to the suite. Big deal, Google and Open Office have been doing this for some time now. But my users arent familliar with those platforms, and training them with it would be a nightmare. Now with the web suite we can have remote workers access these files quicker, and edit them quicker. No need to email a copy of the document to themselves, or other rediculous ways the users find to get the work they need done. This fits into the whole SaaS/Cloud computing idea, which is hot right now.

Personally it excites me most because its moving in a direction that some day the thin client will rule the work place, which is a DREAM from an administrative point of view. To have cheap end user machines that are fed from a server(s) is a great way to go. It’s still a little pricey to make that move to thin clients with an exisiting infastructure, but hopefully within the next few years it will be in our vision to do so. The motivation for this post came as I day dreamed about how much easier life would be without so much software loaded on a clunky desktop sitting unders omeones desk.

Anyways, check out the Office 2010 preview here.
