Why su.pr won me over
Since I started blogging, I have been a loyal user of bit.ly – mostly because it was the most reliable in my eyes when I was testing different shortening services and I liked having all my data summarized in one place. This week I tried out the su.pr service (run by StumbleUpon) and I was pleasently suprised. The service offers much more out of the box than bit.ly does, and kills a couple birds with one stone.
Right from the su.pr dashboard, you can create your message and include the address to be shortened. From here you can post to your twitter or facebook account, and schedule it go out later as well. You can bypass the option to post and just shorten the URL as well. The reporting is what caught my eye, and the integration with the StumbleUpon service helps get your site into that network to help drive traffic.
The reporting that is given for the service is a huge help. It watches your twitter followers and how many are clicking through to your links, as well as give you your best time of day for suggested posting times. As I’ve talked about in other posts, your time of day for publishing can greatly increase the traffic that arrives. The service also offers a wordpress plugin for easy publishing with a short url. It Makes it very easy to get the word out when a new post comes out.
The final sell for me was that when users follow your link with su.pr they are given the option to give the thumbs up with the StumbleUpon toolbar that is displayed in the browser. This option can be turned off if you do not like it, but why shoot yourself in the foot? Give su.pr a shot – you probably won’t turn back.
