Sony's wireless unit - picture from gizmodo.com

As a self proclaimed geek, I follow new technology fairly closely and am always impressed however it’s not very often that I get excited enough to blog about it. This year at CES many vendors are showing off the soon to be released wireless 1080P products that may hit stores by the end of this year. This is some really exciting stuff that is very close to reaching our homes. The signal is transmitted via 802.11n or RF in some cases, and from reports the quality is nearly perfect compared to wired solutions. Check out individual unit details @ gizmodo.

I also saw this morning that there are TV’s that are completely wireless (including power) that are being shown this year. As of now its limited to about 6 or 7 feet from the base unit, but still very exciting. While the technology is being shown this year, its likely that it won’t hit homes for another 2-3 years. As a benchmark, wireless 1080p units were shown first in 2008, and will not be hitting shelves until the 4th quarter this year.
