Hartford Business Journal Technology Summit 2010

The Hartford Business Journal held it’s annual Technology Summit 2010 and Strateg-e Awards on 2/25 at Maneeley’s in South Windsor, CT. The gathering was a real treat for anyone engaged in social media and e-marketing in the region.

The keynote speaker Mark Roberge, VP of Sales for Hubspot, put on a great presentation on inbound marketing and how the wheel of social media can play a part in your blog or website. I also had a chance to speak with him after about the recent security breach on Hubspot’s popular Twitter Grader service and his thoughts about Google Buzz. I give Hubspot a boatload of credit for the transparency they have had with the entire issue, and being very public about what happened. They also had the issue fixed within just a few hours. Mark also feels that with some tweaking, Google Buzz will be a service that will be here to stay.

One thing that really stuck with me that I’m sure isn’t much of a surprise is that when the audience was asked how many people actually followed through and bought a product from someone initiated by a  cold call, not a single person raised their hand. The response was much different for those who purchased from a referral via the web or social media.

It was a great chance to meet some social media experts in the area and see how things are changing across all industries because of the web. For those who attended, share your thoughts and favorite parts of the event here!

  • The feedback from Mark Roberge about the results of the "how do you buy" survey, not only for this audience, but for audiences ranging from students at MIT to business folk in a variety of settings is convincing anecdotal evidence about the power of social media marketing. We use HubSpot's methodology for ourselves and for clients, and the analytics support the claim that inbound marketing works.
