Windows Mobile 7 Preview
Microsoft is rolling out the details for Windows Mobile 7. For the first time on a Windows Mobile release, I am actually excited to see some competitive moves from the platform that has always seemed to just not get it right. They have gotten away from the clunky start menu style, and integrated a simple touch screen interface that organized your tasks in a logical way. This was previously only available by loading 3rd party themes that were resource intensive. Integration with Office applications is tighter, including a new integration with SharePoint.
The OS will also offer XBox Live! integration, which is a first for Microsoft. Media is also a huge focus on the new OS which is why they have brought the top Zune features into it and allow it to sync to your PC in the same way Zune does. Last but not least, they will have new marketplace for applications to rival Apple’s App Store.
One huge hurdle for me is still the lack of information on a central management console, which IMO has been Windows Mobile greatest weakness in the business market. They just cannot compete with the Blackberry pricing and feature set for a small business with enterprise needs.
