BES Express a New Free Flavor of Blackberry Server
RIM recently released Blackberry Enterprise Server Express (BESX) which is a new flavor of the popular server software. The great thing about BES Express is that you do not need to purchase any CAL’s (or register them for that matter, like previously done with BPS) and the software itself is also free.
The software is scalable, up to 2000 users on a dedicated server. This blows the old limit of 30 users out of the water. We recently went through an upgrade form BPS 4x to the new BESX and it was fairly smooth. The key was turning off the IT policy and setting it back to default BEFORE doing the upgrade. When the new installation finished, each user was added back to the server and they were back online in just a few minutes. I could see how this would be tedious, but with BESX there is no migration tool which is available as part of the higher tiers of the software.
