How to access the root httpdocs folder from subdomain using Plesk

I ran into an issue this week where I needed to access the files in the main domains httpdocs folder from the subdomain folders that Plesk 8.6 creates. The problem wouldn’t exist if Plesk created the subdomains within the main httpdocs folder but that’s just not the case.
